Case Study 15: Melbourne to Gold Coast
Austin Hospital Melbourne to Robina Rehabilitation Hospital Gold Coast Queensland.
A 37 year-old female with four children was referred by Queensland Health to the Austin Hospital Melbourne for increased frequency and severity of refractory epilepsy. Over the last twelve months the seizure had severely limited her capacity to function and a decision to travel to Melbourne for specialist treatment was made.
She was elective admitted to the Austin Hospital in February 2013 and underwent right temporal lobectomy that was successful in correcting her refractory epilepsy, however, inter-operatively became complicated by a multi focal stroke resulting in a dense left hemiplegia, left homonymous hemianopia and left sensory deficit.
After two week of acute care at the Austin Hospital in she was well enough to commence rehabilitation and she was transferred to Royal Talbert Rehabilitation Unit while she waited for a rehabilitation bed to become available closer to home.
Medical Connect continued to tracked her progress and after almost four weeks after the initial surgery she was clinically stable to fly. She was successfully repatriated to Robina Rehabilitation Hospital Gold Coast in March 2013 to commence long-term rehabilitation.
